Del Mar Heights School

The new Del Mar Heights School represents a bold reimagining of K–6 education. With its stunning coastal setting and commitment to student-centered learning, the 69,000 sq. ft. campus was fully rebuilt from the ground up. As the furniture dealer, Tangram Interiors supported this transformation by providing future-ready, sensory-conscious, and mobile furniture solutions throughout the school. The result is a harmonious blend of progressive pedagogy, biophilic architecture, and intentional design—a space where learning, wellness, and nature intersect.
Project Goals
The Del Mar Union School District approached the project with a clear vision: to maintain their established “kit of parts” furniture strategy across campuses while enhancing how students learn both inside and outside the classroom. Key priorities included decentralizing the traditional library, offering students freedom of choice in how and where they learn, and providing flexible furniture options that support wellness, decompression, and sensory needs. Above all, the district wanted a space that reflected the school's natural surroundings and supported the evolving needs of both students and educators.
Solutions & Highlights
Tangram provided full-scale furniture solutions for all educational spaces across the school, excluding administration. This included classrooms, collaboration hubs, hallways, the innovation room, wellness zones, and more. The selected products—primarily from Norva Nivel—were chosen for their mobility, vibrant color palettes, and adaptability to the layered, indoor-outdoor design language of the campus.
Spaces Furnished:
- Classrooms: Designed with choice and movement in mind, featuring flexible seating arrangements that support sensory needs, decompression, and individual learning preferences.
- Collaboration Hubs & Innovation Rooms: Open, dynamic spaces furnished for group projects and hands-on exploration, aligned with the school’s emphasis on STEAM learning.
- Hallways & Transition Areas: Outfitted with soft seating and agile setups that encourage informal collaboration and spontaneous learning moments.
- Wellness Spaces: Incorporated directly within classrooms to give students calming areas for reset and reflection.
Our Approach:
Our furniture strategy mirrored the architectural intent: light, open, and deeply connected to the natural surroundings. With floor-to-ceiling windows and accordion-style glass doors inviting in the ocean breeze, the furniture had to feel equally fluid and organic. The bright finishes and smooth mobility of Norva Nivel pieces supported not only functional classroom flexibility but also emotional well-being. Tangram worked to ensure each space enhanced the school’s coastal architecture, drawing the outside in and giving students spaces that felt both grounded and inspiring.
Results & Impact
Today, Del Mar Heights School serves over 500 students in a facility that merges thoughtful design with holistic educational values. Tangram’s furniture solutions helped the district fulfill its vision of a flexible, inclusive, and community-driven environment—one where furniture supports personalized learning, social-emotional development, and daily interaction with nature. As the school continues to evolve, the foundation laid through this project serves as a model for progressive education in California and beyond.
