The Need for an Ergonomically Sound Workplace

Your employees spend a lot of time at work every day. So it’s important for them to be comfortable in the workspace. And it’s also important for them to be healthy.

There are many things you can do to improve the health of your employees. You can design your offices in such a way that employees will not suffer the ill effects of sitting down at a desk for eight hours a day. You can design an ergonomically sound workplace.

Present Day Human Beings vs. Cavemen

In order to understand the importance of ergonomics, keep in mind that human beings are not made to work in a seated position all day long. Our ancestors used to spend their time on their feet, hunting and gathering throughout the day. They were very physically active.

It’s only in recent times that it’s become more usual to work in an office space on a computer. And human beings are feeling the ill effects of it, usually in their backs. Many people have lower and upper back pain from sitting at a computer all day.

Creating an Ergonomically Sound Workplace

One way to resolve the problems caused by our new, seated method of working is by taking frequent breaks and walking around. But another way is to make the workstation ergonomically sound.

  • Nowadays, it’s possible to find ergonomic chairs which maintain the S-curve of the back. They may take some getting used to, but the long term effects are undeniable.
  • You can also make sure that the computer screen is situated at eye level so that the person doesn’t have to keep looking down at it. This prevents upper back and neck pain.
  • Plus, you can make sure that the computer keyboard is at elbow-level so that the person’s arms are bent at a 90 degree angle while typing on it. This helps to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
