Joe Lozowski, a graduate from the University of Michigan, is a 25+ year contract furniture veteran. His first 13 years were spent at Contract Interiors, a Southfield Michigan based Steelcase dealership. As Vice President and General Sales Manager he led and directed the activities of 10 highly diversified business units. During his tenure, the dealership was awarded the coveted Q1 Quality award from Ford Motor Company and Steelcase’s Dealer World Class Performance Award.
In 1996, Joe founded Universal Business Interiors (UBI), a Haworth dealership in Detroit and generated in excess of $30M annually in his 5 years of ownership. UBI was a Haworth President Circle winner for sales achievement and quality processes 3 out of those 5 years.
In 2001, Joe had the opportunity to purchase Tangram Interiors, an existing Steelcase dealership. Always ready for a new challenge, Joe sold his successful Haworth dealership and relocated along with his family to Southern California. In 2002, he procured the assets of BKM of CA, the only other local Steelcase dealership. And so began the massive integration of these 2 storied dealerships. Joe’s focus was on internal processes and external relationships in addition to building a strong rapport with the A&D community which he considers to be a vital partner to the continued success of Tangram. After only one year, Joe successfully had the 2 entities united under the Tangram name and his flagship company was well on his way to continued and sustainable profitability.
Tangram re-engineered its corporate identity in 2005 along with re-branding their showroom to better convey Tangram’s broad range of capabilities, clearly define its unique value and partnering with clients to inspire them in their daily working atmosphere. Under Joe’s guidance, Tangram has emerged as the third largest Steelcase dealer in North America with sales in excess of $110M annually, employing over 250 people in six locations – Los Angeles, Orange County, San Fernando Valley, Inland Empire, Fresno and Bakersfield – making it the largest and most diverse office furniture dealership in Southern California. Joe actively participates in managing Tangram’s largest clients while continuously looking for ways to improve and diversify Tangram by acquiring complimentary businesses. In addition to Tangram Interiors, the flagship of the line, Joe also owns Tangram On-Site, Tangram Studio, Tangram Flooring and Tangram Move, which are leaders in their own right in the contract office industry.
Between all of Tangram’s different business entities, Joe employs over 250 seasoned professionals in the contract office industry. He takes pride in giving back to his company, his employees and their families as Joe knows that it is a continued team effort that allows the Tangram fleet of companies to flourish. Joe also believes in demonstrating the spirit of human kindness by reaching out to others in need and uses his passion to energize others to do the same. Tangram and its employees actively support many local charities, including annual fundraising for and participation in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Yet, the charity closest to Joe’s heart is the Orangewood Children’s Foundation – a facility in Orange County that focuses on the ongoing needs of children in foster care. Not only does Joe actively participate by sitting on the Foundation’s Board, but more importantly Joe and his wife Sonya adopted three young foster children – two brothers and their sister – and welcomed them into their family that already included 2 teenage daughters attending college. Joe has also been on the Board of Mater Dei High School for 3 years. When a free moment arises, Joe enjoys playing golf and supporting his beloved Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Red Wings.
